GUIDANCE AND COUNSELLING SERVICES
Ms Grainne Dunleavy is the guidance counsellor and she helps students deal with all aspects of their lives including both academic issues and on a personal and social basis. Students and parents can contact the counselling and guidance services to make an appointment, where topics can be discussed privately.
WHO?
Ms. Grainne Dunleavy is the guidance counsellor.
'My job is to provide emotional support for the children and make sure that their unique needs are being met. I believe strongly in providing the emotional support to ensure that each child feels safe, happy and secure in his/her school environment.'
GUIDANCE SERVICES
Guidance refers to such programs as
- academic guidance
- vocational guidance
- behavioural modification programs
- life-style skills programs
- transitional programs.
The counsellor deals with such wide ranging issues as
- personal and social skills
- problem solving
- self awareness
- sexuality
- education
- decision making
- anger management
- behaviourial modification
- organisational skills
- motivation
- subject choice and level
- study skills
- examination skills
COUNSELLING SERVICES
Counselling is by appointment and enables student to discuss more private topics in confidentiality. The counsellor follows the rules of confidentiality and will not divulge what you have shared in a counselling session. The exceptions are
- where the student gives permission
- in the case of danger to life and limb
- where the law or ethics requires it
- in anonymous consultation with other professionals
The counsellor will refer students to other professionals when ethically or legally required to do so. Such referrals will follow established guidelines about confidentiality and permissions. The referring counsellor will do what he or she can to ensure that the referring agency deals with the student in a professional way.
CONTACT & APPOINTMENTS
Students can make an appointment by contacting Ms. Grainne Dunleavy before morning or afternoon classes, during recess or after school up to 4.30.
Appointments are normally for one class period.
When the appointment is made students will be given a note containing the name and appointment details. Students must show the note to their teacher to ask for permission and bring the note to the counselling session.

IOWAS
In the fall of each year we administer the Core Battery of Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (Reading, Language Arts, and Mathematics) to all students in grades 1-8 considered to have achieved a certain level of English proficiency by their teachers and the support staff.
HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS
Every two years in Spring we invite the local English speaking and bilingual high schools to present themselves to the seventh and eigth grade students and their parents.
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
From time to time throughout the year the Guidance Counsellor will meet with all students sometimes individually or in groups,or perhaps in the classroom. If you child is involved in an incident, which you need to be aware of or is referred for regular contact with the Guidance Counsellor you will be notified.
