ESL: ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

ESL support classes are offered to students in grade 1 to 8. Find out more about our program, meet the teachers and use our helpful list of websites and resources for learning English.

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

We welcome students of a variety of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Our aim is to

  • to develop the student's ability to communicate effectively in school.
  • to develop the student's skills in listening, speaking , reading and writing in English
  • to value the student's cultural and linguistic identity.

We offer a program for beginners and intermediate students.

Mrs C. Greene and Mrs M. Huguenot are the ESL teachers.

There are numerous sites on the internet to help your child learn English - here are our favorites:
Sites for Grades 1-3

  •  British Council - learn English for kids
    for children who are learning English. Find games, songs, stories and lots of activities - and learn English too.
    Kizclub
    provides lots of educational activities in language arts for preschool and elementary age children. 
  • PBS Kids
    a fun site to support learning at home with lots of games and activites.
  • Starfall 
    designed for first grade, Starfall is also useful for pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and second grade. A fun way to learn to read and write.

Summer schools and English language holiday courses
At Marymount we have our own summer and sports camp to help children aged 5 to 14 to learn English. We also have links to accrediated organisations offering English language holidays courses for students of all ages. Find out more.

Ji Hye arrived in the beginners ESL class from Korea.  Two years later she entered the Red Wheelbarrow Creative Writing competition and her story, The Spider and the Mosquitoes won an Honorable Mention.  Ji Hye is pictured receiving her certificate from famous author, Jack Gantos.
