WHAT I DO

The school nurse is responsible for the health and well being of all children in school  with particular concern for

  • Illness
The school nurse is responsible for calling the parents about illness.  All outbreaks of contagious diseases should be reported to the school nurse immediately.  These inlcude chickenpox, measles, mumps, scarlet fever as well as cases of lice and ringworm.
  • Accidents
Depending on the severity, accidents during school hours will be first dealt with by the school nurse and then, if necessary, the hospital of the parent's choice or the nearest hospital.  The injured child is always accompanied to the hospital.  All accidents are reported immediately by the school to the parent or guardian of the injured child.   For this reason it is of the upmost impotance that the emergency telephone numbers provided to the school at the beginning of each school year be continually updated by the parents.
  • Medication
The school nurse may distribute medication to a child during school hours provided a doctor's prescription accompanies the original medicine container.  All medicines brought to the school must be deposited at the nurse's office at the beginning of the school day.  No medication may be self-administered or kept in the child's possession.
  • Health Records and Forms
The school nurse is responsible for maintaining mandatory school health records.  Each year parents are required to return an updated copy of the Health form and Field Trip Medical Release form regardless if the form was submitted the previous year.  Health forms must be signed by a parent and a medical practitioner.
