Marymount International School, Paris students placed well in all categories in this year's Young Author's Festival, and took home a number of prizes! Marymount students kicked off Digital Citizenship Week with the Marymount Cardboard Challenge on Saturday, February 4th. The Marymount Cardboard Challenge was an opportunity for students (and parents too!) to build whatever they can dream up out of cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. This year's editions of Marymount's Digital Citizenship Week and the Think Pink Anti-Bullying Campaign were combined into one, as the main focus of Think Pink this year is on digital citizenship! In the digital age, bullying has taken to the internet with "cyber-bullying," making this year's combination especially pertinent, and Marymount is committed to teaching our students good digital citizenship. A special thanks to our guest speak, Jon Santiago, for participating in this year's events!
Although our internationalism is something we observe and experience everyday on campus, International Week is Marymount's annual and much anticipated celebration of our community of global learners. This year's International Week was no exception, and was an exciting display of the many cultures and diverse backgrounds at Marymount. This year, grades one, two and three have adopted a spelling program called Words Their Way. Lower Elementary School Team Leader and Grade 2 teacher, Yolanda Garnier, has been leading professional development workshops in assisting with the implementation of this wonderful differentiation-spelling program that allows students to work at their appropriate developmental level. Recently, Grade 6 students studied personal narrative writing - reading and analyzing narratives written by professional writers, as well the work of their colleagues, other 6th grade students. After going through the authentic writing process (generating ideas, rehearsing, drafting, and editing/revising) it was time to publish their work and celebrate all that they learned about how to write a compelling and meaningful personal piece with a publishing party! On November 15 Marymount students traveled to Valencia, Spain where they participated in the annual Valencia Model United Nations Conference (VALMUN) which is hosted at the American School of Valencia. Marymount was one of seven schools participating in what has become a significant middle school European Model United Nations (MUN) conference.
Service learning at Marymount is embedded in our curriculum and are purposeful assignments that aim to foster the connection between the RSHM Network of Schools and therefore enable students to speak with one voice in support of the RSHM Mission. Our Middle School Student Leadership Team started off their very active year of service with a retreat and project management development training at the RSHM Student Leadership Retreat. This year, the event was held in Rome with our sister schools, Marymount International School, London, Marymount International School Rome, and Istituto Marymount. Our team leaders and curriculum developers recently deepened their knowledge of UbD with one of its founders, Jay McTighe in a recent workshop at the American School of Paris.
On Wednesday evening October 5 young alumni who attend local High Schools in the Paris area were invited to the campus for a reunion. The current 8th grade class was also invited as a way of bringing everyone "back together" to talk about their high school experiences, visit and party with teachers and staff and enjoy a dinner served from a local food truck, Cantine California.
