Marymount FabLab & STEAM Education

Whether today's students go on to be astronauts, artists, engineers, scientists or presidents, we know that the challenges their generation faces will demand creative and innovative solutions. Our school is dedicated to providing the best tools to our students, and Marymount is proud to be the first international school in France to have a dedicated 'FabLab' on our school campus!

What is a FabLab?

It’s a place for invention, creation, discovery and sharing, a space of inquiry. FabLab Maker Space is a world wide growing network of educational digital fabrication labs, that emerged from MIT’s Center for Bits & Atoms Fab Lab Program. FabLabs put cutting-edge technology for design and construction – such as electronics, 3D printers, laser cutters and robotics – into the hands of our students.

By providing access to the tools, the knowledge and the financial means to educate, innovate and invent using technology and digital fabrication, a FabLab allows anyone to make (almost) anything, and thereby create opportunities to improve lives and livelihoods around the world.

Why a FabLab?

The goal of some of the activities at the Marymount FabLab is to engage our students as quickly as possible in real projects and design challenges, creating an authentic context for learning. Good projects create the need to learn more and this process motivates students to learn more about a specific subject and to learn to learn. The FabLab allows students to experiment, take risks, and play with their own ideas, giving them permission to create, imagine, and build.

Full STEAM Ahead Initiative

In the September 2016 Marymount launched the Full STEAM Ahead Initiative with the opening of the Marymount FabLab. The Full STEAM Ahead Initiative aims to support the integration of STEAM Education into the curriculum across all subjects and grade levels.

About STEAM Education
The well known term STEM education refers to the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. However, STEAM education incorporates an “A” for the arts – recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are often best developed through a healthy exposure to the arts.
